IMMEDIATE NEEDS
- We are in desperate need of litter (Fresh Step Unscented).
- We are now in the process of preparing
a new area for the cats to live in while they are waiting for their new
homes. One section is nearly completed but we have plans to pave
another 12x12 area and add on an atrium. If anyone can be of
assistance, labor wise, please let us know. The materials, for the most part, have been donated.

BUTTERFLY
The picture below is from the Sun Sentinel Newspaper
Judy Scott, left, Crystal Scott and Cindy Lane tend to Butterfly, who was found starving.
Hearts For Horses was founded due to the economic downturn. With today's economy, so many people were abandoning their horses and we just couldn't look the other way!
We took in our first rescue on January of 2010. Her name was Butterfly and she changed our lives forever. We had never seen a horse as skinny as she was! It was heartbreaking, to say the least. When she laid down she was not strong enough to get up. We had to physically help her to stand. It took a lot of strength and manpower, pulling and pushing. After having her for only fa few days, we became very concerned about her condition. On the 5th day we found her in her stall unable to get up. We managed to maneuver her out of the stall to where you see her in the above photo. Many hours passed and she couldn't get up. A team of us spent 26 hours with her, flipping her over every 45 minutes to keep the circulation going. We brushed her, we hand fed her, we hugged and kissed her. We hoped and prayed that she would have the strength to stand. It took ten of us to help her up. Once she was up her legs trembled and she fell to the ground. Our vet informed us that it was her time to go. Sadly, we had to put her down.
Butterfly broke all of our hearts. We all loved her. She was such a sweet mare, so grateful for the food we gave her, so responsive to the love we gave her. If we would have found her sooner she may have survived. It then became our quest to make the public aware. Butterfly was on a main road in Parkland, Florida and I'm sure many people drove by and saw her. No one notified us about her until it was too late. She was loved and pampered in her last days. At least we were able to give her that. R.I.P. Butterfly. We miss you. :(
I don't think the general public is aware of the fact that you can't just leave a horse in a field somewhere and expect it to survive. There is much, much more to horse care than that.
